This game appears to be illustrating grievances with coding projects, possible of the game itself. The strange choice of button prompts and lack of hidden routes seems to reflect on a disconnect between what makes code work and why it does. Overall, it feels like someone who codes more out of obligation than for entertainment.
This game perfectly represents what it is like to get code to work in the game. The personification of the computer is really good, too, because that is how I would associate errors showing up in the devlogs. I also like how you made the computer font red. It really makes a connection between the computer and the error messages one would receive with faulty code in a project.
Great theoretical description. I'm a fan of the fact that you don't make it too obvious which key to press, so the player's more incentivized to read the great story you've compiled here. Nice work!
I liked how relatable the narrative of your game was. I also liked how different endings are depending on our choices.
I think the purpose of the game is to capture the despair you feel when coding sometimes. This game perfectly captures the process of debugging and failing in coding projects. The conversation with the computer where eventually you feel like you fuse with it could be like when eventually you just mindlessly start clicking through the debug console, letting the red marks guide you where ever they need. The good ending is just giving up, which also points to that despair.
The overall game content is excellent. The only issue is that the buttons are a bit hard to find. It would be great if the button layout were standardized, or if the buttons were highlighted.
It was a little difficult to parse what is part of the narrative and what is a button prompt. I think making the color of the button prompts different than the narration would help.
Yeah I noticed that sometimes the key inputs would be within the narrative text and other times there were options listed below. I think choosing one of those would make the game flow better
yes looking back on it I can definitely see this, ty both for the feedback! This totally went over my head lol
I like the split paths the game allows you to take! I think one thing that could be done more to improve the game would be to hide certain buttons/instructions in the text that the player can input to get even more endings!
The key prompt is included in the narrative, and not highlighted out like a game UI, and in this case it could be more immersive if it’s made more diegetic, such as pressing certain key not only progress the game but also does something to the machine in the game story
That is a really cool idea! I also think that more things can be done when it comes to integrating more paths that require a keen eye to catch!
I like your use of image and the font! It creates a sense of technology. I like the design that players can talk to the "machines". It reminds me of another game about picking up a phone. It was also about "machines have their own conscious". It is really interesting!
I really like the concept of the game, but one addition that could make it feel much more powerful is make the music more intimidating when the computer is doing its villain speech moment.
Weirdly enough, this game and the idea of a computer becoming sentient reminds me of the movie "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (niche pull I know) . Something about the similar ideas about working with a technology/computer that you trust and use so often, then the computer turning against you is interesting to me. I also think that this idea will become more and more relevant as we progress in technology and the use of artificial intelligence.
age of ultron is so peak- remember when the MCU was so good that people thought that movie was mid? Good times
This reminds me of another student's game where you go through a missing phone and it talks back in a strange message at the end. I really like the descriptions of trying to finish the project which is extremely relatable to us as students.
Oh my gosh this game is so relatable LOL! I love the atmosphere and overall this game reminded me of BMC somehow - maybe the idea of something not-human helping humans accomplish their goals and having to juggle with whether or not to accept that help.
I thought my computer was gonna be chill but alas... it was anything but. (I got the bad ending). This definitely holds components of general "AI" takeover. It also reminds me of "Get Out" where the mc is stuck in the back of his mind and paralyzed in his own body. (obviously that focuses on completely different themes but both gave me that scary vibe).
Personally, I'd just smash my computer if I heard voices coming from it. Color schematic was nice, and the background was aesthetically pleasing. Multiple endings was also super neat, especially an ominous ending where the player is left to decide what happened.
@kay24601 / kay do you know how long I was on that damn TAB page! The game interface is lovely and I like the typeface and the color choice you used for the game it really fit in with the theme that you setup for the game. this game captured the feeling of wonder and frustration so perfectly.
@gloriium/ellie
I definitely think this game was made out of frustration with the computer (AND I FEEL YOU SO BADLY coding really feels so awful when it doesn't work), I think especially with the computer telling you what to do (e.g. an error code that tells you why it doesn't work) and feeling like you are being controlled by the program itself. I think you utilize the page images/elements quite well and it makes for an interesting narrative.
It’s oddly scary how the computer seems to have gained sentience and is trying to get us to essentially fuse with them and the multiple endings supporting it.
I like the theme of your game, it’s really attractive and immersive. Also I think the background music helps a lot with the emotion shaping, lead players to feel a sense of technology
I like the overall color and art design of the game, creates a vibe of science fiction and terminator atomsphere. In addtion, the theme of midterm is also colsely related to myself too.
